Geothermal Heating Greenville Residents Need
Geothermal heating and cooling systems are much different from traditional HVAC systems. Standard heat pumps are air-source units that capture or remove heat from the air and transfer it inside or outside of a building. Geothermal systems use a ground-source heat pump that captures heat from or releases heat into the ground.
No matter what the outdoor air temperature is, the temperature 5 to 10 feet below ground always remains at 55 degrees. This steady temperature is what allows geothermal systems to work. It’s also what makes them so energy efficient. Furnaces are only between 80% and 98% efficient. Air-source heat pumps are often up to 300% efficient, but geothermal systems can be 700-800% efficient.
Geothermal systems consist of a series of looped pipes located underground and connected to a heat pump inside the building. In winter, water flows through the underground pipes and absorbs heat from the soil. The water then flows to the heat pump, which heats the water to a much higher temperature than the indoor air temperature.
As cooler air moves through the heat pump, it absorbs most of the heat from the water and becomes far hotter. The process reverses in summer, and cooler water captures heat from the air in the home. As the water moves through the underground loop, all of the heat naturally flows out into the cooler soil.
